The Story Behind San-J

Established in Mie, Japan, in 1804, the Sato family founded San-Jirushi as a Tamari soy sauce and miso company. The logo's three-river design represents the three local rivers they used to transport goods when operating as a port wholesaler.

In 1978, San-Jirushi established San-J to begin importing and selling their Tamari soy sauce in the US market, where it was enthusiastically received. This led to the construction of the first Tamari brewing facility in the US, located in Henrico, Virginia, in 1987.

To meet the growing demand for San-J products, the first stage of a plant expansion was completed in 2019. Today, Takashi Sato, an eighth-generation member of the founding family, serves as the company's president, upholding the exacting standards for brewing the world's finest Tamari soy sauce and Asian-inspired fermented foods.
